Did you know that most traditional cat litters are made from strip-mined clay? This is not chemical free and most contain artificial fragrances and chemical additives. These clay based litters use artificial fragrances to mask cat litter odors. Strip-mined clay is a non-renewable resource that won’t biodegrade in landfills.
Luckily there are alternatives for your cat!
We have converted to Feline Pine Scoop(r) made from renewable Southern Yellow Pine and natural Guar Bean Gum; it is 100% natural. Pines naturally neutralizes ammonia and it is biodegradable. We were worried about changing our cats from their traditional clay litter as they can be fussy, but they really didn’t mind one bit. It smells so much nicer and there is no dust and it is scoopable making cleaning the litter bin daily an easy chore.
Yes our cats still bring some of the litter away from their box in their paws but less than with the clay and it easily sweeps up. All in all it has been a positive change for us and our cats. You can buy the pine litter at Target and Publix (and many more stores) and two more things,
1- it’s made in Florida so that’s another reduction in our overall carbon foot print and
2- it weighs less and so is much easier to carry home.

There is also wheat based litter, bit we have no personal experience with this product. If anyone has experience with other natural products we would like to hear about them.
You can also find biodegradable bags to collect the litter in at your local per store (I use the dog kind as they come on a roll and are easy to handle) so don’t use your shopping plastic bags for this as they are not biodegradable. If you have to bring plastic bags home, collect them, and take them back to a store that recycles them (Publix does this).
Make your cats greener today!
